Where You Fix Your Gaze is Where You'll End Up

Where You Fix Your Gaze is Where You'll End Up
Where You Fix Your Gaze is Where You'll End Up...
I'm a horse lover. Since forever. I've been riding for years, but recently I got the chance to take real riding lessons. During the lesson we would do exercises/patterns on horseback. I came to realize - because my instructor pointed it out - that I had a habit of looking down while I was riding. My instructor would tell me to look up, to look where I was going, and if I looked at the ground that's where I'd end up!
One of my riding books (Dressage in Lightness by Sylvia Loch) says it this way, "Feel that your gaze takes the horse to the markers...It is important to know exactly where you are heading in order to ride the various movements and exercises with easy confidence...when you are focused, minute changes occur in your body language."
Those minute (my-noot) changes have maximum results. Our gaze takes us to our marker, Jesus... We should be consistently, intentionally walking toward Him... Always. He should be our primary focus. And when we take our gaze off of Him is when we end up in the dirt (lost, in a cycle of sin and shame, or worse...).
The dressage reading also states that with our eyes on our marker, we are able to ride various movements and exercises with easy confidence. Spiritually speaking, these include the movements of sorrow and disappointment, fear and unbelief... Of unforeseen circumstances and other trials of life... When we have our eyes on Jesus, these movements are rideable, and our faith is exercised as we navigate them. Our confidence grows, and in time, comes easily.
Philippians 3:14 (GNT) says "So I run straight toward the goal in order to win the prize, which is God's call through Christ Jesus to the life above."
If you're in a bad spot today, if you're somewhere you shouldn't be, if you've fallen into the dirt, check your focus. Are you looking at Jesus and walking in His purpose for you? Or have you looked away and veered off course? If that's the case, correct your gaze:
"Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we're in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed - that exhilarating finish in and with God - he could put up with anything along the way: cross, shame, whatever. And now he's there, in the place of honor, right alongside God." - Hebrews 12:2 (MSG)
